Van Oord, are a leading player in dredging, coastal construction and offshore works who devise unusual but practical solutions to marine problems worldwide. Problem Van Oord ACZ Offshore Division required to demonstrate to clients that they managed their risks to health and safety in a competent manner. In the absence of a comprehensive company wide system, this resulted in a large investment of time and effort for each project in producing documentation describing how management would address the risks in the project. Solution A Safety Management System was developed for Van Oord ACZ which addressed both offshore and onshore European legislative requirements whilst also demonstrating that it met “best practice” in a worldwide environment. It also met the International Labour Organisation guidelines on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and OHSAS 18001. The system devised was simple but effective, whilst recognising that the nature of Van Oord’s work was project based. Van Oord’s clients have recognised that they have a compliant and robust safety management system by complementing them during bids for projects. Benefits The Safety Management System enabled Van Oord ACZ to demonstrate to clients that they managed their risks in an acceptable manner to a defined standard. It has reduced project health and safety documentation to the amount necessary to deal with project specific matters thereby reducing project man-hours by a significant amount. |
