Explosion Assessment Flammable Gas, Explosion Frequency & Flare Combustion Studies
ARC produce assessments and studies based on modelling hazardous scenarios in off shore platforms, FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) and onshore processing plants in the following areas:
Flammable gas cloud ignition, deflagration and blast generation
ARC utilises AutoReaGas to predict explosion overpressures and blast wave propagation. Major Fire and Blast Assessment Simulations can be executed on a variety of structures including offshore platforms, FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading), FSOs and onshore process plants. ARC has worked on numerous pre-design and post design safety case development projects and has extensive experience in this sector.
ARCs’ Capabilities include:
- Steady state and transient dispersion of toxic and flammable gas leaks.
- Explicit representation of gas clouds from gas dispersion solver to blast solver.
- Representation of complex geometries.
- Pressure surface/blast wall failure modelling.
- Water deluge modelling.
- Flammable gas cloud ignition, deflagration and blast generation.
- Frequency studies providing probability of exceedance curves.
- Advanced post processing including the extraction of peak pressures, average pressures, overpressure time histories, panel pressures and overpressure decay.
- Pool and jet fires arising from the ignition of a flammable gas. Plots of elevated temperatures, gas toxicity, visibility and oxygen depletion.

Explosion frequency studies
ARC has carried out a multitude of explosion frequency studies in conjunction with CFD gas dispersion and explosion studies. These have been carried out upon a range of structures including offshore platforms, FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading), FSOs and onshore process plants. ARC can analyse the joint probability of gas leaks, ignition and explosions utilising the latest ignition models allowing the conservatism of study to be reduced. Frequency of overpressure exceedance curves can be provided to allow structural design strengths to be generated for specific criteria.
Flare combustion
ARC can carry out detailed flare combustion analysis and the subsequent radiation effects of emergency flaring on the surrounding structures and personnel. Detailed structures can be modelled allowing for geometry effects to be accounted for. Wind and other radiation sources can be modelled to give an accurate representation of the scenario.
